For Inka Hämäläinen, who turns 20 in December, last winter was full of events: World Cup, World Championships, and the final matriculation exams at the sports high school in Vuokatti.
No performance targets were set for the World Cup. The priority was international experience and building confidence.
The same principle applies to the 2025–26 season. “The goal remains a steady season and competing in the full World Cup circuit. And the Olympics — that is what I have trained for,” she says.
High-Altitude Training and Everyday Life
Hämäläinen spent part of her training season in Anterselva, Italy. The goal was to get a feel for the Olympic terrain and the thinner mountain air.
“The summer season went according to plan. We trained at high altitude more than last year,” she sums up the summer’s training.
Between training camps, Hämäläinen trained at home in Kontiolahti.
“Morning training, some relaxed time and recovery with friends or family, and afternoon training. Everyday life revolves around training.”
Confidence From Success
Last season was a success for the Finnish national team — six Finnish biathletes finished among the top ten in World Cup or World Championship races.
The confidence in the team has carried over to its youngest member.
“I believe in what we are doing. We have done the right things and can continue on this path,” Hämäläinen says.
The experiences gained last winter were valuable — competing in tough situations and learning to perform under pressure.
“Hopefully the upcoming season will bring more challenging moments. Through those, the full Cup tour and everything that comes with it will become routine,” she says.
Memories From Home Races
One of her most memorable moments was the opening of the 2024–25 World Cup season in Kontiolahti. She is expecting a similar atmosphere again in March.
“At the home races there will certainly be friends and relatives present. And hopefully many will come from farther away in Finland as well.”
