Biathlon competition season starts with the weekend GP races in Kontiolahti

The national team for the World Cup opening at the end of November will be named after the GP games. The size of the national team will exceptionally increase from eight to ten athletes.

More than 140 athletes in 19 age groups have signed up for the GP weekend, which consists of Saturday and Sunday sprint races.

The races are women's and men's inspection races for the World Cup opening in Kontiolahti between November and December and for the first IBU Cup competitions. Finland's representatives for these competitions will be named after the GPs.

Instead of the eight athletes familiar from last years, ten athletes will be named to the Finnish World Cup team.

"Last season was successful on a wide front. We got good results in the World Cup and in the junior competitions. In the World Cup ground points, we rose nicely in both women's and men's categories. Thanks to the increase, this season we have five places in the World Cup starts for both women and men", says the sports manager of the Finnish Biathlon Union Jarkko Kauppinen.

The GP race has age categories from juniors under 13 to men over 65. Almost all the athletes of the current A and B national team have signed up. Tero Seppälä and Mari Eder are not included.

"There is a good number of participants in the general series, so there are going to be interesting competitions. The competition is also an important general practice for us competition organizers, so that we can finalize the competition technical preparations for the opening of the World Cup", says Jarno Lautamatti, executive director of the Kontiolahti Athletes.

Both Saturday's and Sunday's speed races can be followed live on Sanomalehti Karjalainen's website from 10:50 a.m. The men's sprint race starts at 11 a.m. on both days, and the women's sprint race at 11:25 a.m.

The broadcasts that can be viewed by the magazine's subscribers are explained by editor Jani Leinonen. The commentator is Tuukka Invenius. The magazine can be ordered for a day at the shortest.
