Sustainability
The Kontiolahti Biathlon is committed to organising the event responsibly. For us, responsibility means taking social, economic and environmental aspects into account.
Social responsibility means making everyone feel welcome and treating everyone with kindness and equality – whether they are volunteers, athletes or spectators. We also take special needs into account in our services whenever possible.
Economic responsibility means understanding the event's financial impact and adapting our operations to the resources available to us.
Environmental responsibility means following the principles of the Ekokompassi environmental certification and continuously working to reduce our carbon footprint. The Kontiolahti Biathlon World Cup received the Ekokompassi environmental certificate in 2020. This year, our environmental programme has been updated, and the event is audited during the World Cup on March 2026.
Our environmental programme includes measures such as reducing and sorting waste, minimising food waste, reusing materials, favouring renewable energy, offering vegetarian food options and communicating about sustainability.
A responsible volunteer
As part of our sustainability efforts, we have removed disposable tableware from locations where this is practical. Lataamo and the spectator tent aim to use reusable plastic cups in different sizes. The cups are professionally cleaned and maintained before and after the event.
If you would like to bring your own mug to use during the event, you can leave it in the mug storage area at Lataamo. Please label your mug with your name.
A Safer Space Event
Our shared goal is to create a welcoming and safe event where everyone can feel comfortable and carry out their volunteer duties.
Safer Space Principles
Respect other people's physical and mental boundaries and their right to self-determination. Do not touch anyone without asking for permission. Remember that you cannot know someone else's boundaries without asking. Speak up if you need more personal space yourself.
Treat others with respect. Do not mock, ridicule, belittle, exclude or embarrass anyone through your words, behaviour or actions. Avoid commenting on people's appearance, gossiping or reinforcing stereotypes.
Do not make assumptions about other people. Do not make assumptions based on someone's appearance or behaviour, or about their sexuality, gender, nationality, ethnic background, religion, values, socioeconomic background or health.
Make space for others. Help ensure that everyone has an opportunity to participate in conversations. Do not dominate discussions; give others a chance to speak. Respect other people's privacy and approach sensitive topics with care.
Listen and learn. Be open to new people, topics and perspectives. Treat new situations as opportunities to learn and develop.
Apologise if you have offended someone, whether intentionally or unintentionally.
Speak up if you witness inappropriate behaviour or treatment. Intervene when appropriate or ask a security steward to assist. Do not simply stand by and watch.
If you experience inappropriate behaviour or treatment and need help addressing the situation or wish to report it, you can contact the Kontiolahti OC harassment contact person: Annu Jantunen, p. +358 50 301 8415.
